Malachite Jewelry

It is not common to see malachite in jewelry but after seeing the swirls of brilliant green last year, Boom's eye was drawn to this unique gemstone and she has created a unique collection of pendants, bracelets and earrings from malachite. The green color in malachite comes from the high copper content. Malachite has been mined for thousands of years to smelt down and obtain copper from but it is only more recently that it has been used for decorative purposes. July birthstone: Ruby

July's birthstone is ruby. Ruby is a stunning pink red gemstone of the corundum family which also contains sapphires. Rubies and sapphires have a hardness of 9 which is only surpassed by diamonds. Many of the words rubies come from South East Asia with a very large number coming from mines in the Mokog region of Burma. Behind the Jewelry: An interview with Boom Chappell

The second instalment of Discovered.us interview with Boom is up on their website. In the first instalment Boom talked about the creative process of hand selecting gemstones to go in her jewelry. The second instalment takes us through the creation of the actual jewelry pieces using hand shaped silver. Each piece that Boom crafts is built around a gemstone and the silver, gold or brass that she uses to make her necklaces, earrings, or bracelets all start with the gemstones but take shape when she she adds the precious metals to the mix.
